The other day I was about to make a mistake at work.
I tried to order "the normal mice" ($17/mouse) for my experiments, but I actually ordered "the expensive special mice" ($120/mouse). I needed 50 mice, so we had to pay "$6000 ($120 x 50)" for the unnecessary mice, instead of "$850 ($17 x 50)" for the necessary ones! If my boss knew it, he would be really angry with me. Fortunately, thanks to the effort of the staff in the animal facility (whose name is Jessica), this stupid order was stopped.
As I wrote before, I use many mice for my experiments compared to other researchers probably. We usually obtain them from the animal-producing company (The other ways for getting mice are to receive from other researchers or to increase mice by mating in our animal rooms.). This time I asked Jessica to place an order for my mice to the company online.
When I noticed that my order was wrong, I contacted Jessica to cancel it immediately. Then, she said "I don't place an order for any mice yet. I thought you just require the quote because this is the first time for you to order this kind of mice.". Her response was so fantastic that I was impressed and she seemed like a goddess. I checked my order history again and I was sure that I formally ordered these expensive mice to her.
Before that, I usually appreciate her way to work because she always answers my questions quickly and do never forget to send me the invoice of mice every time I order them etc. So, I always write my gratitude to her in my e-mails. Though she may be just doing her work, such gratitudes might make her do the best job for me.
I learned from this experience that my thanks to co-workers may bring something good to me. It means that people such as me who have less abilities for doing their jobs need to gratitude their co-workers especially. If they can do it, they may be able to generate high performance at work with co-workers. I guess only people who have excellent abilities well enough can create good results by themselves without other's help.
I also feel that it's fun for me to work and to accomplish something with many people, though I know it's important to complete our work by ourselves as much as possible.

普通のねずみ（1匹$17、1,700円）を注文するはずが、間違えて特殊なねずみ（1匹$120、12,000円）注文しそうに。50匹必要だったので、必要なマウス「7万5千円」のはずが、不要なマウス「60万円」分買いそうになりました。ボスにバレたら大変です。幸い、お世話になっている動物施設の方によってミス注文を未然に防ぐことができました。
前にも書いた通り、実験にはたくさんの動物を使いますが、我々はそれらを主に動物生産会社から購入しています（他の動物の調達方法としては他の研究者から譲ってもらったり、自分らの手で繁殖させて増やす方法があります）。今回もその会社から購入するため、学内の注文を一手に引き受ける動物施設の方に、マウスの種類と匹数等をオンライン上で伝えました。
注文の間違いに気づいたのは翌日。これはまずいと思って早急に施設に連絡しました。すると、この担当の方（名前はJessica）が「まだ注文してないから大丈夫。この特殊マウスは初注文みたいですし、まずは見積もりが必要ですよね。」ですと。Jessica！なんとすばらしい神対応でしょう。彼女のおかげで間違い注文がここで止まりました。自分が出した発注履歴を見返すと明らかに「正式発注」しています。
ところで、普段彼女はマウス受領書を毎週決まった曜日に忘れずに送ってくれるし、メールで動物に関する質問をした際は時間をおかずにすぐ回答をくれたりでとても助かっています。なので、こちらからのメールには、メールを送るたびにその感謝の旨を書いていました。彼女にとって今回の神対応は普通のことかもしれませんが、もしかしたらこちらの感謝の気持ちが通じていたからこそ、こんな対応をしてくれたのかもしれません。
この経験で、普段から仕事で関わる人に感謝しておくと自分に良いことがあるのかもしれない、ということを学びました。研究能力の高い人は誰からも助けを借りず独力で研究業績が出せるのでしょうけど、ぼくみたいな凡ミスをたくさんしたり仕事能力が足りない人は、周りを大事にしてその人たちの助けてもらいながら必要な業績を出していく以外にないのかもしれません。
課せられた仕事を一人でやりきる努力は大事だけど、こんなふうにいろんな人と繋がって仕事することはなんと楽しいんだろう、とも感じています。
