https://honto.jp/cp/ebook/campaign/all-30off.html?cid=ip_hb_albn_01

Gaining toppogi (tteokbokki?) experience points to level up.
I tried to make a kind of Korean foods (tteokbokki) at home today.
Unlike in Japan, I can buy many kind of international foods in Dallas.
As you can see my picture, I added vegetables and water too much..
It looks bad, but the taste was better than I expected.
I realized that it was not difficult to make, so I will try it again.
Thank you for reading my blog always, everyone.
Have a happy new year!

A researcher watched a biographical movie of a successful inventor. He was impressed.
I watched the movie “Joy”, which opened today in the US (I have no idea when it opens in Japan). This is a biography of "Joy Mangano", who is an
American inventor and businesswoman. She created the innovative mop, “Miracle Mop”.
I clearly remember one scene in it: “she had been thinking deeply about the easiest way for cleaning her house and had developed the Miracle Mop by herself. Then, she had tried to sell it to many people with great
difficulty”. The reason why I
remember it is that her ways were very similar to my ways in my researching
work (i.e. to find problems -> to come up with the idea for solving them
-> to prove that the idea is correct -> to open it to public).
Seeing her attitude for facing her difficulties, I was encouraged, and I got
an opportunity to think about something I already have/I’m lacking. Before the new year comes, I watched a good movie.
By the way, this time I could measure my listening skills in English as
well. As I expected, I couldn’t understand
some scenes (probably, I could understand only 70% of the whole story). But I could listen to 70%. I could have got this so far, because my American, Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese and Mexican friends always help me practice English. If I did not have
such friends, I could understand 0% of movies even now, as well as 0% of what
my boss/co-workers say.
Merry Christmas, everyone!

Taking a risk which I might be embarrassed..
I came to Dallas from Japan 4 years ago this month. Here is the most impressive experience for me in the last 4 years. This is a story when I got a nice experience after I challenged myself with taking a risk which I might be embarrassed. This made me change my mind later.
***
This is a story when a few months passed after I came here. I was looking for opportunities to have non-Japanese friends (I'm here to improve my English level for work). One day, one of my ESL classmates was looking for people on Facebook who go to the “The Killers” concert with her. When I saw it, I thought it’s a good chance to make new friends (she is Chinese).
I tried to message her like “I want to go with you guys”, but I stopped. I had not talked to her so much so far, so she might be surprised at my sudden message, and then she might refuse it. I thought if she did that, I would be embarrassed. Even if she agreed and I could join them, I would also be embarrassed by my broken English. After thinking deeply, I finally messaged her. She replied to me, “Let’s go together”. I was relieved. But..
After a while, I heard from her that her friends could not make it (I had to go there with her alone). I was so nervous and scared, because I had never hung out with a person alone who doesn’t speak Japanese (At this moment, I regretted to message her).
On that day, we went there together. Contrary to my expectation, this day became a fantastic day. I did never feel embarrassed. The concert was good, I could practice English, and we became friends each other (She is my first non-Japanese friend here). In addition, I realized people’s personalities have nothing to do with their countries. I mean, she is Chinese, but she is not different from my Japanese female friends so much. Like that, I got a nice experience after I challenged myself with having a risk which I might be embarrassed.
***
Looking back, I have so many experience I was embarrassed. For example, I’m embarrassed every time when I give presentations in front of people at meetings. However, I don’t care that because I have the experience I wrote above, and I always get something important there. Also, I usually speak to people at meetings without hesitation to get valuable information from them. In addition, I’m trying to make new American friends here, and to join their group as long as my time allows. Thanks to that, I found some of them who have great thinking or ways of life. I’m learning a lot from them.
I noticed that becoming insensitive to embarrassment makes it clear what I want to do or what I need. I feel it became easier to get them than before.
***
By the way, recently I met her again who went to the concert together for the first time in three years. I have no idea what she thought, but if she thought my English got better than before, I would be glad.

My teacher is a high school student.
I'm taking an ESL class at Dallas public library. The teachers consist of volunteer staffs, and the fee for the lesson is free. My teacher is a high school student. He always give nice/fun lessons to us (The students in my class are four Mexican and one Japanese right now.).
By the way, this volunteer system is really excellent. Everyone can get benefits like these:
(1) "Students" can receive lectures for free
(2) "Volunteers" can get experience or training
(3) "Library" can offer such public services with minimum money
I'm enjoying this class every time, but recently I have felt guilty to take such a nice program for free.. So, I have started to think that I should return something helpful for the library/Dallas city/the US in the future. That is:
(4) Some people may do something for the organization where he/she received volunteer someday
In (1)-(4), I can't find any defects, and I can only say this system is wonderful. In my country, I don't think such a nice system is working. If I have chances in the future, I want to spread this idea there.

Why did you come to the US from other countries?
I'm enjoying to attend the ESL (English as a Second Language) class which is held at the library every week. Today's topic was "Why did you come to the US?".
One of participants, Brazilian, said that her home town is not a safe place. So, her family had really wanted to move. Another person, Iranian, who is a devout Christian, told us that she had no place to be in her home country, because the majority are Muslim.
I said to the classmates that I came here mainly to learn English for my work. Then, they asked me that only this is your reason? What else?? Why?? They seemed not to understand me.

How to solve life problems in the US. I was in a trouble with a car dealer these days.
Last summer I met a problem with a car dealer. The air conditioner in my car didn't work well suddenly and the cool air didn't come. That means that it was impossible to use my car in mid summer, because here is Texas and the temperature become more than 40 degree. As soon as I noticed it, I brought it to the Mazda dealer and I asked them to fix it. A few days later my car was returned and the air conditioner seemed to be fixed correctly (it costed about $950.).
However, I noticed one issue soon. The information display in the center console didn't show anything, though it was working well before fixing the air conditioner. I contacted the dealer again and ask them to fix the display. Then, they said that the additional fee is needed for fixing it ($350) and it was broken from the beginning. I couldn't understand what they said. I explained the truth, but they didn't listen to me. I was not sure how I could do next.
Then, I asked my American friends how they react if they meet such an issue. They suggested these five tips to me:
1. Pay $350 immediately and let them fix it
This is the quickest way to finish the issue. But most of people would not be satisfied with this.
2. Tell his supervisor or manager
This may work well and we may be able to get a good solution. But it will not work if the dealership isn't interested in return customers. I recommend this, because sometimes I meet such sales people (especially here) who judge everything on their own without confirming company's rules.
3. Send a letter/e-mail to their official customer center
This may also work well.
4. Contact a small claims court, BBB
BBB (The Better Business Bureau) is an organization which gives us a better solution for small disputes between shops and customers. Here is how to contact BBB: First, access the BBB website (http://www.bbb.org/). Next, enter our zip code and open the BBB of our region. Then, we just put our and shop's information and the detailed problem there. It seems that we can do the all process online.
5. Tell media such as TV stations or News paper offices
If the shop's behavior is too bad and these media think that this problem make people surprised or have impact on people, they may broadcast it. Also, they seem to have a dispute resolution team that may help us confront the problem. In Dallas area, we can contact them:
(1) Becky.Oliver at Fox4DFW (TV) (Becky.Oliver@usa.net or Becky.Oliver@foxtv.com)
(2) Dave Lieber at Dallas Morning News (News paper), (http://www.dallasnews.com/investigations/watchdog/)
After all, my problem with the Mazda was solved like this. I asked them to check the display again, then they found it wasn't broken (It had simply connection issue and the Mazda didn't confirm it at the final stage of fixing the air conditioner.). This wasn't my fault, so I asked them to bring my car to my home for free. They agreed. If I didn't complain about the additional fee ($350), I might have to pay it for replacing the display to new one.
Here is the most important thing. People from other countries such as me don't know much about the life in the US. So, it is very important for us to make reliable American friends here whom we can ask even small questions at any time. This time I felt relieved talk to them as well as I could know how to solve life troubles as written above.
4. BBB(The Better Business Bureau)
方法は、まずBBB(http://www.bbb.org/)にアクセスし、住んでいる地域のZIP code(郵便番号、ダラスであれば75235とでも)を入力します。
Oliver@foxtv.com)。
Dave Lieber (http://www.dallasnews.com/investigations/watchdog/)

Oliver@foxtv.com)。
Dave Lieber (http://www.dallasnews.com/investigations/watchdog/)

I'm having such meals every day!
Everyone likes the foods which are eaten from their childhood and are familiar. I'm the same. Rice seems to be essential for me, because when I was living without rice for 1 week before (I kept having bread), I felt bad around my stomach. My digestive tract (stomach and intestine) may be suitable for digesting rice, since I have been having it for more than 30 years.
I don't want to die because of a lack of nutrition, so I usually cook and have such meals: Rice and Stir-fry vegetables! I'm thinking I won't die with them. Since I hate to cook, I make them for lunch and dinner only once a week. I have them little by little every day.
Let me show how to cook my meal here!
1.Rice
I like to add beans and and wheat into rice, when I cook rice.

2.Stir-fry vegetable
It't not difficult to make it. It must have high nutritional value (including proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers).

3.Enjoy!!
I may be a good cook!

I spoke to a cute lady...hehe. This may not be a bad act?
Last night, I was fed up with doing my experiment at around 1am in the common laboratory (the FACS core facility). I was so sleepy and really wanted to go home. While I was doing it, a female Chinese or Korean postdoc was coming into the room. I was surprised to see her because I didn't expect somebody was still working so late at night.
I focused on my work, but I remembered that my current hobby is learning languages (Actually, I'm learning not only English but also Chinese and Korean by myself at home). I thought that it was a good chance to show my language skill! Then, I tried to speak to her when she was about to finish her experiment.
We talked for a while. Also, we talked about us each other. According to her, she is a Korean and came to Dallas five years ago (fortunately, she seemed to understand my broken Korean!). To my surprise, she had been working, taking care of her child. Hearing her story, I was impressed to know one example of woman's career development, because I'm interested in how women do both working and leading a family life simultaneously.
It was good for me to speak to her. I could add one person in my friend's list. After talking with her, that boring work progressed so quickly.

How many more times can we see our parents before they die?
I happened to find a useful website. This can tell us how many times you can see your parents in the future.
"See your folks": http://seeyourfolks.com/
It is very easy to use. Just enter where your parents live, how many times you see them on average in a year, and their ages. Then, push "Show My Result".
Your results show on the screen right away.
In my case, I will be able to see my parents only 8.5 times before they die!
Let's try it, if you live apart from your parents, especially.
"See your folks": http://seeyourfolks.com/

The similarity between how to progress with researcher's work and how to make love or how to get boy/girlfriends
While I have been working as a scientific researcher for years, I have noticed some common things about how to get new findings or how to solve problem in scientific area. Here is the one I found. I guess many researchers are doing their work based on it.
(1) First, look for some new topics you can research
(2) Next, build hypothesis and consider strategy (Think the best way for getting new findings)
(3) Then, perform these experiments
(4) If your hypothesis are denied by all data...
I noticed one more thing. These methods can be applicable for making love.
(1) First, look for some new topics you can research (Look for handsome guys/pretty ladies)
(2) Next, build hypothesis and consider strategy (Think the best way for getting a new boy/girlfriend)
(3) Then, perform these experiments
(4) If your hypothesis are denied by all data... (If you are dumped...)
Today is the Valentain's day. I wish everybody who read it can spend a wonderful time with your partner!
(1) First, look for some new topics you can research
- Collect information (search literature and attend academic meetings)
- Make sure your experimental techniques and your circumstance (reagents or equipment available)
- Perform easy experiments for screening
- Then, find the new topic! Decide the theme.
(2) Next, build hypothesis and consider strategy (Think the best way for getting new findings)
- Make plans for detailed experiments
- Value all information you can get, even if they are so tiny things
- Have a confidence, even if they are challenging topics for you such as those in Nature, Science...etc
(3) Then, perform these experiments
- Do experiments, experiments and experiments
- Don't miss all information from what you are doing
- Don't be in a hurry. You will be able to get nothing, if you rush so much.
- Change your hypotheses and strategies little by little with data you are getting
(4) If your hypothesis are denied by all data...
- Check all data you got/Reflect yourself on your behavior
- Get new experimental techniques in order to obtain new data
- Don't be so sad. You should think you could obtain new experience with such efforts this time.
- Think about which is better, you can continue this topic or try new one.
- Don't be emotional!
I noticed one more thing. These methods can be applicable for making love.
(1) First, look for some new topics you can research (Look for handsome guys/pretty ladies)
- Collect information (co-worker, friend's friend, picking up on street, and dating service online)
- Make sure your experimental techniques and your circumstance (your looks, conversation skills, and friends who can cooperate with you)
- Perform easy experiments for screening (collect some information from friends around such possibilities or with making a chat with them directly)
- Find the new topic! Decide the theme. (That's him/her!)
(2) Next, build hypothesis and consider strategy (Think the best way for getting a new boy/girlfriend)
- Make plans for detailed experiments with all information you got (this is important in order to get)
- Value all information you can get, even if they are so tiny things
- Have a confidence, even if they are challenging topics for you such as those in Nature, Science...etc (Don't be afraid, even if she is so cute or so beautiful)
(3) Then, perform these experiments
- Do experiments, experiments and experiments (e-mail/text, phone, dating, and xxx etc.)
- Don't miss all information from what you are doing for her
- Don't be in a hurry. You will be able to get nothing, if you rush so much.
- Change your hypotheses and strategies little by little with data you are getting
(4) If your hypothesis are denied by all data... (If you are dumped...)
- Check all data you got/Reflect yourself on your behavior
- Get new experimental techniques in order to obtain new data (ex. Read many manuals for getting boy/girlfriends?)
- Don't be so sad. You should think as you could obtain new sample you didn't know this time.
- Think deeply about which is better, you can continue this topic or try new one.
- Don't be emotional!
Today is the Valentain's day. I wish everybody who read it can spend a wonderful time with your partner!

Do you hate helping other people? I'm always expecting to get your assistance.
When I'm asked by people something I can do, I'm usually take it willingly as much as possible, even if I have my own work and I'm busy at the moment. Of course, the reason for this is that I want many people to help me when I have difficulty for something. I may feel it stronger than other people, so I may notice easier than other people that someone is in trouble. And seeing such people, I feel like helping them soon.
This happened to me these days.
One day my friend working at other institute was looking for a new postdoctoral position (a new job), since his lab was about to be closed soon because of his boss's moving. Fortunately, he could get his job in a lab at UT Southwestern (the same institute as me) last week. I was really relieved to here that.
What if he couldn't find any jobs in the US? He would have to go back to his country (his visa status was going to be expired soon) and would have to quit his work as a researcher in medical science, because there was no jobs for him in his country. That is, he was in dangerous situation as a researcher. When I heard his sad situation, I felt sorry for him and wanted to help him, because if I were him, I would really want other's help. In those days, all I could do was to ask my friends around me about available positions for him and I did that.
I was surprised to find one thing. Some of his friends did nothing for him, even after they knew his serious crisis. I think they could asked other people, as I did. At first, I though they disliked him or they were very busy in doing their business. But this seemed not to be right. They simply had no interest in him and in his critical situation! I couldn't believe that.
However, I can't blame for his friends, because I may think it too much. And I might not have realized many other's difficulty so far. This time I happened to find his crisis fortunately.
Helping people is important for us, because I'm thinking that would be a kind of the safety nets to live or survive in the world. We can't live without other's assistance. We need other's help in some situation. If I help someone, I might get other's help. If I don't help anyone, nobody would help me.
Needless to say, I should forget my kindness after working for people. I dislike guys who have a patronizing attitude. :)

A Japanese is excited to use a shower gel with the scent of Japan made in the US.
I found a shower gel with the scent of Japanese cherry blossom at Bath & Body Works in Galleria in Dallas. Seeing it, I wanted to have the smell and to try it. I bought it soon.
All shower gels I have used in the US are scented strongly for me compared to those of made in Japan. But this item is different from others available in the US. This smell is relatively weak and I felt comfortable after using it.
I thought this smell is similar to that of "Sakura-Mochi (桜餅)", a rice cake with sweet bean paste wrapped in a preserved cherry leaf. Of course, it smells good.
I was glad to know that one thing related to Japan is valued in the US.

I'm addicted to...(○○中毒です)
I was about to write my research here this time, but I happened to find this picture right now while I was surfing on the internet.
Fig. 1. Negative cycle of drug addiction. (Ref.1, Translated into English by Tsugu)
This is from the website of Miyagi prefecture in Japan (in Japanese only) and showing the frightfulness of drug usage. Seeing it, I remember that I'm addicted to another thing now. Here it is:
Fig. 2. Negative cycle of Facebook addiction which is showing Tsugu's current situation
At the same time, I also find the website which we can make its parodies (Ref. 2, in Japanese only) and made this new figure with it.
I may be a Facebookaholic! Somebody, please help me to stop Facebooking!!
...It took about one and half hours to draw this new picture (though I have much things I need to do about my work!). Next time, I will write my research.

My visa status has been extended
Even if my visa couldn't be extended this time and I lost my job, I would be also willing to look for something interesting in Japan and to start them. Though I would be frozen like a slug at the moment when I was fired by my boss...
