A researcher watched a biographical movie of a successful inventor. He was impressed. いち研究者が発明家の伝記映画を見た。ちょっと勇気づけられた。

I watched the movie “Joy”, which opened today in the US (I have no idea when it opens in Japan). This is a biography of "Joy Mangano", who is an American inventor and businesswoman. She created the innovative mop, “Miracle Mop”.

I clearly remember one scene in it: “she had been thinking deeply about the easiest way for cleaning her house and had developed the Miracle Mop by herself. Then, she had tried to sell it to many people with great difficulty”. The reason why I remember it is that her ways were very similar to my ways in my researching work (i.e. to find problems -> to come up with the idea for solving them -> to prove that the idea is correct -> to open it to public).

Seeing her attitude for facing her difficulties, I was encouraged, and I got an opportunity to think about something I already have/I’m lacking. Before the new year comes, I watched a good movie.

By the way, this time I could measure my listening skills in English as well. As I expected, I couldn’t understand some scenes (probably, I could understand only 70% of the whole story). But I could listen to 70%. I could have got this so far, because my American, Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese and Mexican friends always help me practice English. If I did not have such friends, I could understand 0% of movies even now, as well as 0% of what my boss/co-workers say.

クリスマスの今日（12/25）、映画を見に行きました。アメリカ国内で今日公開された「Joy」という映画で、発明・実業家のアメリカ人、ジョイ・マンガーノの半生を描いたお話です（日本での公開は未定だそう）。この人は、日本では馴染みが薄いですが、1992年に発売後に大ヒットした画期的なモップ「ミラクルモップ」を発明した人です（モップの繊維部分を手を汚さないで絞れるようにしたモップ）。

映画の中でよく覚えているシーンがあります。忙しいシングルマザーだった彼女が掃除にかける時間を節約できるのかを一人でひたすら考えてミラクルモップの開発をし、完成した試作品を苦労しながら人々に売り込んでいく場面です。よく覚えている理由は、彼女の方法と自分の仕事の方法が極めて同じだったからです（問題を発見する→解決する方法を考え出す→その解決方法が正しいこと証明する→人々に知ってもらう）。彼女の苦労を見て勇気付けられたとともに、自分に足りてるもの、そして足りない部分を考えるきっかけをもらえました。新しい年を前に良い映画を見たと思います。

ところで、今回の映画鑑賞は英語リスニングの力試しの機会でもありました。わかってはいましたが100%聞き取ることはできず、たぶん70%くらい…。細かいところはどうしてもわかりません。とはいえ、70%まで聞けるようになったのも普段の練習に付き合ってくれるアメリカ人、韓国人、中国人、メキシコ人の友達のおかげ。もし彼らがいなかったら、未だに映画理解力は0%だったでしょう（職場での英語力でさえも）。
