Why did you come to the US from other countries?

I'm enjoying to attend the ESL (English as a Second Language) class which is held at the library every week. Today's topic was "Why did you come to the US?".

One of participants, Brazilian, said that her home town is not a safe place. So, her family had really wanted to move. Another person, Iranian, who is a devout Christian, told us that she had no place to be in her home country, because the majority are Muslim.

I said to the classmates that I came here mainly to learn English for my work. Then, they asked me that only this is your reason? What else?? Why?? They seemed not to understand me.
